Veriler ,ağ üzerindeki cihazlar arasında iletilirken OS’nin her bir katmanında enkapsülasyona uğrar.OSI ‘nın her katmanı iletişim kurulan diğer cihazdaki aynı katmanla iletişim kurar.OSI modelindeki her katman iletişim kurmak ve bilgi alışverişi için PDU (Protocol Data Units) ‘ları kulllanırlar. Aşağıdaki tabloda herbir katmanın kullandığı PDU gösterilmiştir.
